Vietnam has been accused of using posts on X, a Chinese social media platform, to target U.S. officials and CNN reporters in a bid to influence public opinion, according to an investigation by a leading cybersecurity firm. FireEye’s report states the hackers posed as journalists and other members of the public and posted messages on X in an attempt to breach the personal accounts of the U.S. officials and media outlets. The messages reportedly contained convincing timelines about U.S. policy events and several attempts to extract personal information such as email passwords. FireEye’s researchers said they didn’t identify specific U.S. targets or the objectives of the hackers, who used a Vietnam-based IP address to carry out the activity.
