How Democrats have soured on Israel

In recent years, many prominent Democrats have exhibited an increasing frustration with the Israeli government and its policies. This has intensified since the election of Donald Trump, who has been widely criticized for his stance on Israel and the Palestinians.

In particular, many Democrats have come to view the Israeli government’s policies toward the Palestinians as overly aggressive and imperialist. In 2017, the Democratic Party adopted a resolution which reaffirmed its “unwavering commitment to the security of Israel,” while at the same time, calling for a two-state solution that would concede the internationally recognized right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

Moreover, many Democratic office-holders, including some presidential hopefuls, have expressed support for the “Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions” (BDS) movement, which advocates for economic pressure on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories. This has been met with criticism from other elements of the Democratic Party, who see this stance as potentially damaging to the US-Israel relationship and even detrimental to the peace process.

Overall, the Democratic Party’s view of Israel has shifted toward a more nuanced approach, as opposed to its previous stance of uncritical and unqualified support. While the party has maintained its commitment to Israel’s security, it is becoming increasingly critical of the government’s policies towards Palestinians, which many see as an obstacle to achieving lasting peace in the region.
