The ‘Gaza Metro’ is a network of underground tunnels built by Hamas and used by militants in Gaza to move people and weapons. The system is estimated to be 2-3 km long and includes entrances above ground in many areas, connecting buildings and structures. It is equipped with electricity, communications systems, and ventilation and is used to transport weapons, explosives, personnel and money between Hamas’ base in Gaza and its allies in the Palestinian territories and beyond. The tunnels are also used to pass civilians between different parts of the Gaza Strip, or to store goods. The network is believed to be much bigger than public estimates.
