CNN names former New York Times CEO Mark Thompson as its chief

CNN has announced that former New York Times CEO Mark Thompson will serve as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective February 21.

Thompson brings three decades of high-level media experience to CNN, having served as chief executive of the BBC and latterly the New York Times. He has a proven track record of leading coast-to-coast change initiatives, spearheading strategic transformations and demonstrating a proven commitment to digital innovation.

Thompson succeeds Jeff Zucker, who looked after the US arm of the WarnerMedia news and sports network for the past seven years.

Thompson commented, “I am deeply honored to become the next leader of the iconic and globally respected CNN. I’m humbled by, and proud of, the chance to build on the exemplary work of Jeff Zucker and the team during the last seven years to further strengthen and grow CNN in the U.S. and around the world.”
