On Monday, September 28th, the Department of Justice filed a motion with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking to recuse Judge Emmet Sullivan from presiding over a case brought by the Republican National Committee (RNC) against the U.S. government. The motion claims that Sullivan has “prejudged the issues presented” and is therefore unable to impartially hear the case. The case involves a dispute over whether the government’s security protocols are sufficient to prevent foreign interference in the upcoming 2020 election. The RNC has alleged that internet companies have too much control over the nation’s election infrastructure and that the government has done little to protect against foreign interference. The Trump administration is now seeking to have Sullivan removed, claiming that he has previously expressed views that conflict with its own regarding foreign interference in U.S. elections.
