Ohio voters to decide whether to make it more difficult to amend state’s constitution

Ohio voters will have the chance to decide whether to make it more difficult to amend the state’s constitution when they go to the polls this November. Currently, any proposal can be put on the ballot if it is backed by signatures from at least 10 percent of the state’s voters. The proposed measure would double that percentage to 20. It would also require any proposed amendment to pass with a majority of the total votes cast, rather than just a majority of the votes in favor of it. Supporters of the measure say it will make it more difficult to pass constitutional amendments, which they say can be used to bypass the legislative process and limit the efforts of future Ohio lawmakers. Opponents of the measure argue that it will make it too difficult for citizens to amend the state constitution and that it could potentially restrict their ability to make changes in the future. The measure is expected to be on the ballot this November.
