Belize suspends diplomatic ties with Israel, renews call for ‘immediate ceasefire’

Belize has suspended diplomatic relations with Israel in protest of the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. In an official statement released on Wednesday, the nation’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington called for an “immediate ceasefire” in the region and for the use of diplomacy to resolve the crisis. Elrington noted that the government was “fully cognizant” of the “alarming” humanitarian situation in Gaza and condemned the violence against both Israeli and Palestinian civilians. He called on both sides to “exercise restraint” and to “guarantee the security and well-being of all people in the region.” Elrington also expressed hope that the UN-mediated ceasefire would soon be established and would bring an end to the conflict. In the meantime, Belize has decided to suspend diplomatic relations with Israel until the situation has been resolved.
