The sanctions come as part of increasing international pressure on the Islamist group since it assumed control of Gaza in 2007. The US has placed three Hamas leaders on its blacklist and said it would restrict Hamas’s access to financial services in the US. The UK has frozen assets of multiple companies and individuals in the UK. The sanctions are intended to further isolate and impoverish Hamas, which has been deemed a terrorist group by the US, UK, and several other countries.
