At least 300 people have been killed and over 1 million displaced across East Africa as floods and mudslides triggered by heavy rains have wreaked havoc in the region. Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Rwanda, and Uganda have been among the worst-hit countries in the region, where tens of thousands of homes and other infrastructure have also been destroyed by the rains.
In Somalia, over 200 people have been killed and 80 others are still missing after a powerful storm caused flooding in large parts of the country. More than 188,000 people have been displaced, with many of them taking shelter in shelters run by Somali and international aid groups.
In Ethiopia, at least 50 people were killed by torrential rains that caused floods and landslides. The country has also seen an increase in displacement, with more than 250,000 people having been forced to flee their homes.
Kenya has been battling floods for over a week now, with 56 reported deaths by now. Over 81,000 people have been displaced in the country.
In Sudan, the government has also declared a state of emergency, as flash floods have killed at least 64 people and displaced more than 170,000.
Rwanda and Uganda have also been affected by the heavy rains, with 36 and 61 deaths respectively reported in the two countries. Rwanda has seen over 100,000 people displaced, while the figure is closer to 90,000 in Uganda.
The East African governments are doing their best to provide relief and compensation to the people most affected by the flooding and mudslides. International aid groups have also begun to deploy teams and resources to the countries in need of assistance.
