In an urgent effort to bolster support for his policies in Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has embarked on a blitz of meetings and appearances with members of Congress.
Zelensky has met with the Democratic and Republican leaders of the House and Senate, and he is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress later this month. He has also visited numerous foreign policy think tanks and editorial writers across the capital.
The blitz is an effort to build support for Zelensky’s proposed reforms in Ukraine, including anti-corruption efforts and reforms to Ukraine’s economy. He also seeks to gain backing for his efforts to further engage in diplomacy with Russia as Ukraine continues to weather an ongoing conflict in its eastern regions, where Russian-backed separatist forces remain active.
Zelensky’s efforts to court Washington’s support is important for his domestic efforts to modernize Ukraine, as the country needs foreign aid and assistance to carry out its reforms. Additionally, he hopes to receive sufficient support in Washington in order to see a possible lasting resolution to the Donbass conflict, and for Ukraine’s role in international politics.
Zelensky has been largely received positively during his engagement in Washington, as both Democrats and Republicans have praised his attempts to reform Ukraine and to seek a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict. His efforts may prove pivotal in ensuring long-term stability in Ukraine, and allowing the country to continue to modernize and progress.
