On March 19, 2021, a volcano erupted in the Geldingadalir valley near Reykjavik, Iceland, following weeks of seismic activity. The eruption began around 10:45 a.m. local time and produced an ash plume that reached 11 to 13 km (6 to 8 miles) altitude. About 2,000 people living in the area were evacuated as precautionary measures. The eruption is the first one of the Fagradalsfjall volcano in over 800 years. So far, it appears to be a relatively small-scale eruption and has not caused any significant disruption.
